Hades II

Is Hades II worth it?

Yes. Hades II doesn’t try to reinvent what worked it refines it. If the original hooked you with its combat, style, and storytelling, this sequel builds on that foundation with confidence.

What it is

Hades II is a roguelite action game where you play as Melinoë, the Princess of the Underworld, fighting your way through ever changing runs while slowly uncovering a mythological story centered around time, fate, and rebellion.

What it does right

  • Combat & builds: The new weapons and magic systems add meaningful variety. Runs feel flexible, and experimenting with different setups is genuinely rewarding.
  • Progression loop: Dying still feels productive. Each run pushes the story forward or unlocks something new, keeping momentum strong.
  • Presentation: The art, animation, music, and voice acting are all excellent. It feels polished and intentional from moment to moment.

Caveats

  • Learning curve: The game can feel tougher early on, especially while learning the new mechanics and magic focused combat style.
  • Early pacing: The early hours can feel slower compared to the first game, especially before key Arcana cards and upgrades are unlocked.

Who should buy

  • Fans of the original Hades.
  • Players who enjoy build driven roguelikes with strong atmosphere.
  • Anyone who values presentation and storytelling alongside gameplay.

Who should skip

  • Players who dislike dying and restarting as a core mechanic.
  • Anyone expecting a radically different experience from the first game.

Verdict

Hades II is a strong sequel that respects what came before while adding enough new ideas to stay fresh. Even in its current state, it’s easy to recommend and it has the potential to be even better as it continues to evolve.
